Abstract

Robots are indispensable in many manufacturing industries. They increase productivity, reduce costs, improve product quality and overcome labour shortages Robots that are intelligent and mobile can be of great assistance to us in places dangerous for humans such as nuclear reactors, space exploration, underground and deep water exploration. Robots are also very useful in scenarios where several procedures have to be repeatedly performed with high speed and accuracy for long periods of time such as in industry assembly lines. The recent developments of control devices and digital systems such as Programmable Logic Controllers PLCs allow for precise and wide range applications of robots The main objective of this thesis work is to design and implement a robot model to carry out a certain transportation task from a position on a transportation line to another position controlled by PLC. Ladder Diagram (LD) language is used for programming the PLC. The timers used to move the robot in forward and reverse directions to precisely catch and put the object in the desired locations are adjusted The system modeling on Matlab/Simulink is carried out to evaluate the system performance. The experimental system is built in laboratory to assess and examine the accurate operation of the robot. Simulation and experimental results are found to be in good agreement. The operation of the robot is also found to be precise.
