Gender Analysis for Agricultural Extension Activities in Some Villages in Assiut Governorate

Abstract
This research aims to know the gender gap in agricultural extension activities in Assiut Governorate through achieving the following objectives:
(1) Increasing the understanding of the rural woman as a customer of agricultural extension services.
(2) Gender analysis of personal, social and economic characteristics of farmers and their wives and extension personnel in Assiut Governorate.
(3) Gender analysis of roles and responsibilities of farmers and their wives in the research area.
(4) Gender analysis for agricultural extension activities in Assiut Governorate.
(5) Gender analysis of constraints of extension activities in Assiut Governorate.
(6) Gender awareness among extension personnel in Assiut Governorate.
The research depended on data obtained from two categories of respondents. Frequencies, percentages , means and Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Rank Test were applied for data processing and analysis.
The most important results of this research are:
(1) There was a gender gap between farmers and their wives in education, land ownership, communication with information sources, cosmopoliteness and attitudes towards agricultural extension.
(2) Women bear great roles and responsibilities and often do not have spare time.
(3) There was a gender gap between farmers and their wives in their knowledge of agricultural extension activities.
(4) There was a gender gap among extension personnel in the research area.
(5) There was a disparity in constraints facing farmers and their wives to obtain agricultural extension services in the research area.
(6) There was low level of gender awareness among extension personnel in Assiut Governorate.
Based on the results of this research, the following recommendations can be drawn:
(1) It is important to narrow the gender gap among extension personnel in Assiut Governorate by increasing the number and percentage of women working at the agricultural extension system in the Governorate.
(2) It is important that women extension workers take the responsibility of field extension work and communicating rural women.
(3) More extension activities should be devoted to rural women.
(4) Extension activities should be based on clients’ extension needs and compatable with their gender roles and responsibilities.
(5) Efforts should be devoted to eliminate different barriers to reaching rural women and narrowing gender gaps in extension activities in Assiut Governorate.
(6) Efforts should be devoted by the agricultural extension system to improve the gender awareness among extension personnel in Assiut Governorate.
(7) More researches and studies should be carried out to determine extension needs for men and women as a basis to provide them with proper extension programmes and activities.
