Abstract

Trachoma is a chronic keratoconjunctivitis caused by the obligate intracellular bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis.
Trachoma is both an ancient and a stubborn disease; slow to blind, obviously hard to “cure” in a public health context and is considered the most important infectious cause of ocular morbidity. It was estimated in 2004 that approximately 18%-24% of blindness worldwide is caused by trachoma.
Trachoma must be viewed as a community disease, not as a series of cases, in order to develop effective public health measures for control.
The diagnosis of trachoma is almost always based on the clinical appearance, laboratory assays are principally used in research.
The last two decades have provided scientific advances in almost all areas of chlamydial research. These include clinical, diagnostic, epidemiologic, physiologic, pathologic, microbiologic, genetic, and immunologic characteristics of chlamydial diseases.
The World Health Organization recommended a strategy for the treatment of trachoma which is the “SAFE” Strategy, of surgery for trichiasis (BTRP), Antibiotic therapy “Azithromycin as a single oral dose”, Facial cleanliness and Environmental improvement With the SAFE strategy, the World Health Organization (WHO) and its partners are targeting the Global Elimination of Trachoma as a cause of blindness bythe year 2020 (GET2O2O).
