Abstract

Two e>periments in this study were earned out to evaluate lipid metabolism during two critical periods ot animal life.
A) The first experiment had done in Egypt to compare the metabolic events between friesian cows and Egyptian buffaloes around calving. Fifteen friesian cows and thirteen female buffaloes were kept under house conditions in seperate pens for S weeks before the precluding date of calving till two months after calving, and they were fed for maintenance and production.
The obtained results were:
1— Blood glucose: The results cleared that, glucose levels in friesian and buffaloe cows increased steadily to the time of calvinq. In early lactation there was a period of energy deficit in both groups of animals. Analysis of variance between the groups denoted non significant increase of blood qiucose level in the buffalo group.
2- Blood Lipid Parameters: The most notable changes in a11 estimated lipid parameters (blood total cholesterol blood total lip5ds, blood phospholipids and blood triglycerides) in both friesian and buffalo cows were the strong decrease at calving and the increase at the first few samples thereafter. Piso the most important finding is the big highly significant differences between friesian and buffalo.
