Abstract
The Work Describes studies on the effects of auxin on
H+ release and. glycosidec linkage turnover in tissue from

Pi sum sativumL., cv. Alaska epicotyls.
A methylation analysis of pea epiootyl cell walls is
described and a structure for such cell walls including the
component macrornolccu.les is proposed. This structure is
compared with that already published for sycamore callus cell wal
H+ release is in general correlated v/i th increased growth mediated by auxin but there arc significant differences between intact and peeled segments and ceil sheets, A hypothesis is proposed to account for the observed results implicating the existence of ’food-back’ inhibition of proton release.
Experiments with sugar released fro.:, cell sheet material derived from pea cpicolyln indicate that the effects of .lev/ pli and auxin on linkage cleavage are similar in Lhe short term and that the concept that auxin induced cell extension .is mediated by increased li”* release is probably valid. it appears that cyclical linkages affected by both auxin and lov/ pU and which jturn lead to chaa-os iu the mechanical properties of the v/all are located in the xylo-lucan component of the wail and its interconnection with the rest of the wall matrix, and
to a lesser extent in the tetruarabinosi.de component of the wall protein.
