Abstract

There are several different types of breast cancer, which can develop in different parts of the breast. The most common is known as Ductal breast cancer, which develops in the cells that line the breast ducts.Ductal breast cancer accounts for about 80% of all cases of breast cancer.Calcification is common finding in both benign and malignant diseases of the breast.Small calcifications, often referred to as micro calcifications, are seen in about one third of all breast cancers and sometimes constitute the only radiographic sign of malignancy.Micro calcifications are also commonly seen with a variety of benign diseases such as sclerosis, adenosis, other fibrocystic changes including epithelial hyperplasia and intraductal papilloma. Most of these calcifications are nonspecific in appearance with an overlap of nonspecific malignant calcifications. Some small benign calcifications have a characteristic appearance. One example is the micro cysts of fibrocystic changes and micro cystic adenosis. The content of these cysts is often referred to as milk of calcium.Due to precipitation of the calcium, the micro cyst appears as a rounded smudge on a film with vertical beam direction and as a linear or curvilinear structure on a film taken with horizontal beam direction. This is often referred to as the teacup phenomenon.Vascular(always arterial) calcifications are common findings with advancing age. They are more common in diabetic patients with hyperparathyroidism.Typically track like;arterial calcifications may be less characteristic at an early stage .
