Abstract

There is a need to find alternative treatments that are effective in reducing water content of large volume of effluents sludge and are low in cost. The main aim of this study is estimating the effect of sludge types applied in study running on the fixed mirrors natural dewatering system. This will be a helpful in minimizing the areas that required for the sludge dewatering process through the drying beds with a higher efficiency and lower operation costs than the natural method applied in most of W.W.T.P. in Egypt. Pilot studies were conducted at the site of EL-BERKA WWTP. The average amount of wastewater produced by this plant is about 5000 m³/day. The sludge treatment process and the disposal consist of a gravity type thickening process and ordinary the dewatering operation for the condensed sludge by using conventional drying beds. The pilot plant unit of this study erected in EL Berka wastewater treatment plant is consisting from seven conventional drying beds with constant dimensions and a frame for the mirror fixation requirement. Six beds of them toke the mirrors effect in consideration and the seventh bed run as a buffer drying bed. The essential factor which is having a main effect on the sludge dewatering and drying process is the type of sludge that runs through the study. The behavior of the sludge type depends upon the source of it beside the suspended solids ratio measured in its sample. The illustrated data achieved depending on the measurements of EL-BERKA wastewater treatment plant laboratory on the municipal sludge in the W.W.T.P., it was
noticed that the primary sludge had the largest suspended solid ratio between the others types of the sludge under study, and the next sludge type has high S.S. ratio is the thickened sludge, and the lower type of sludge having this ratio is the secondary
sludge. The comparison between the different types of sludge focused on the dewatering rate with respecting to achieve a high efficiency of the final product of the effluent dried sludge. Thus, water content is the main factor that could make this comparison through it to illustrate the maximum end product efficiency of decreasing the water content with the lowest time period
required for ending this product of dried sludge, taking the sludge thickness in consideration. Temperature is a major factor in this study, and that is found in most of Egypt lands through all months of year, this makes the proposed system is a suitable in all places of Egypt.
