Abstract Scandium is a rare and very expensive metal due to new applications especially in laser research have arouse of much interest in its accurate determination and high purity production. A single source of scandium is not known to exist, mainly obtained as a by product of the alumina, uranium and tungsten production as well as from the apatite and titanomagnetite. It is used widely as high efficiency and multifunctional laser crystals, solid electrolytes and transparent ceramic scintillations. The present thesis deals with separation of scandium as a by product from red mud producing during the alumina processing by a combined method of ion exchange and solvent extraction, separation process is controlled through continuous chemical analysis in different stages. |
