Abstract

The purpose of this research is to present a scientific study for Islamic Cairo area and the main religious tourism forms, which their features appear clearly in this area. The intentional area is what situated inside the following boundaries: al-Baghala Street from the northern side, Port Sa’id Street from the western side, Ahmad Maher Street from the southern side and al-Mansuriyya Street from the eastern side.
The most important features of the religious tourism in Egypt are visiting graves, religious celebrations and visiting monuments. All of these components appear clearly in Islamic Cairo area. This area has the mausoleum of Sayyidna al-Hussein, the most famous and holy mausoleum in the whole country, and consequently, the area witnesses every year the celebration activities of the moulid of Sayyidna al-Hussein. In addition, Islamic Cairo area has a great number of several Islamic monuments, which comprise a variety of types and styles demonstrating the civilization of six Islamic successive periods. Moreover, this area is very distinguished by keeping many of its old planning and features.
The study is divided into two sections: The first one ”Islamic Cairo monuments” throws light upon the study area and its monuments through two chapters; the first chapter ”Islamic Cairo area” includes the history of the area before its foundation by the Fatimids and the stages of its development until the present age. The second chapter ”Monuments in Islamic Cairo area” shows the types of Islamic monuments, which already existing in the study area, dividing under three main parts: the religious architecture, the civil architecture and the military architecture. Then the chapter explains the most important Fatimid monuments in the study area, which comprise the mosques of al-Azhar, al-Hakim and al-Aqmar in addition to the gates of al-Nasr, al-Futuh and Zuwayla.
The second section of the thesis ”The religious tourism in Egypt” throws light upon the most important types of the religious tourism in Egypt through three chapters: The first one ”Visiting graves” clarifies the origin and the position of visiting graves habit in Egypt, in addition to the usual practices, which often connect with this habit and the impetuses, which encourage it. The second chapter ”Religious celebrations” clarifies the meaning and the history of the mawalid in Egypt as the most important tourist feature of the religious celebrations. The third chapter ”Visiting monuments” clarifies the three main factors, which affected deeply visiting monuments in the area; the spirit of the study area, the local communities and the history of preserving monuments in the area. As a result, Islamic Cairo area is a very distinguished area by its special nature, history and its great heritage of Islamic monuments so it has unequalled future for the religious tourism.
