Abstract

A fascinating area of research, which has proved rewarding, is the examination of plants which have a suitable history of use in folklore medicine. The early studies of these plants have fulfilled a great mission,as they often resulted in the isolation of biologically active principles. These natural products have contributed so much to human happiness by helping to combat the threat of disease.
The isolation of these active products marked the beginning of the intense scientific campaign to produce synthetic agents, based upon the structure of naturally occurring, pharmacologically active substances, as well as the gradual rejection of plants.
No one could deny that many synthetic substances have proved very useful therapeutic agents, however, nowaday there is just as much interest in plants as a source of medicinal agents as there was hundred years ago. This is because being natural products, they are safer than the potent synthetic drugs which often produce side effects. Another motive for such interest in plants, is the great need for new prototypes for the synthetic organic chemist to use in the design of potentially superior chemotherapeutic agents.
