Abstract The present study aimed at investigating the effect of a training program in conversation skills on developing 2nd year English majors’ acquisition and use of these skills and their creative thinking. Eighty 2nd EFL majors at the Faculty of Education, Minia University were divided into two groups; an experimental group and a control one. The experimental group was trained in a program in conversation skills and the control group followed conventional methods of teaching conversation. The researcher used ESA (Engage, Study, and Activate) technique in implementing the program. Tools of the study prepared by the researcher included a training program and three tests; conversation skills acquisition test, conversation skills use test and creative thinking test. Data obtained by students in the pre- and post- tests were analyzed using t. test. Results revealed no significant differences between the experimental and the control groups in their performances in the pre-tests. In the post- tests, the experimental group significantly surpassed the control group in all tests. It was concluded that systematic, intentional teaching of conversation skills helped students develop their acquisition and use of these skills and their creative thinking. Discussion of these findings, recommendations and suggestions for further research were presented. |
