Abstract
This study was carried out at the Animal Behaviour Unit, belonging to Animal Production Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Menufiya, University, Shebin El-Kom, Egypt. The study was started in August 2007 to lasted up to June2008. Behavioural studies on farm animals become one of recent researches which consider a basis for the investigators and farmer to collect knowledge of how to deal with animals in this concern. Moreover such researches guide us to know the best systems of suitable management for this animal to produce the best of their production according to their genetic structures. Small ruminants, such as goats stared to take a pronounced situation for the farmers due to their productive abilities which to be suitable for consumer needs. In addition management conditions are available for farmers especially in Egypt as one of the developing countries. Accordingly, Damascus goats as a type of goats are spreading in Egypt due to high fertility in twinning in addition, to their adaptation to our Egyptian condition. Meternal behaviour patterns that affecting directly or indirectly on nursing of kids during critical period of life was one of objectives of this study. This study aimed also to throw some lights on the maternal behaviour in Damascus goats in relation to environmental and genetical factors. Some factors affecting behavioural characteristics such as period, parity, age, body weight, litter size and season were studied. Heritability and repeatability estimates were also calculated to understand the evolution of behavioural traits studied.
