Abstract

Railway simulation using computer-aided programs are specified used for replacing the actual railway network by a model that can be easily tested for any desired changes and modifications in infrastructure or in trains operations. Therefore, different computer applications recently used in railway operations are discussed and summarized in this research. The main goal of this research is to apply simulation program (RaiISys 3.0) on ABO-KIR railway line in Alexandria, as a case study, in order to assess the impact of changing track configuration and operating systems on the performance measures and time-table preparation. At first, all the infrastructure elements and the operation components of the ABO-KIR railway line have been entered to the computer to construct the simulation model, these inputs e.g. track layout, existing timetable plan, trains characteristics. Secondly, the simulation process has been carried out to construct a graphical model of the case-study track including line alignment and train movements, as existed situation. Finally, eight different alternatives have been suggested, analyzed and evaluated. Each alternative contains a certain operating aspect with a train control technique.
