Abstract

In this thesis the fusion reaction between heavy ions is described on the basis of coupled channels theory. In this thesis we apply the full order coupled channels code CCFULL to the three fusion reactions involving Ge-isotopes, i.e. to O16+Ge72-76, Ge72+Ge72 and Ge74+Ge74 fusion reactions. We calculate the fusion cross section and the associated fusion barriers distribution in two different ways. In one of them, we assign the coupling matrices from the data of the available Coulomb excitation. In the other, we assign them from standard either rotational or vibrational coupling models. By comparing the results of these two calculations, we discuss whether the analysis of the fusion data can shed light on the special structural properties of the Ge isotopes such as the transitional property of Ge74 and the possible shape admixture in the ground state of Ge72. It has been shown that the shape admixture in the ground state of Ge72 suggested by the experiments of Coulomb excitation yields a significantly different barrier distribution from that of both the vibrational or rotational coupling models if we calculate the fusion cross section by taking only the low lying levels whose transition matrices are known at present. It has been shown that the fusion barrier distribution for the Ge74+Ge74 system calculated by using the transition matrix given by the Coulomb excitation noticeably differs from that in the rotational model, but qualitatively resembles that in the vibrational coupling model. This may explain why the vibrational model has been favoured than rotational coupling model in the extended analysis of Esbensen.
