Abstract

The importance of good ante-natal care in the prevention of maternal and perinatal health problems is now generally recognized brown ( 1982 ) , better Standars of ante- natal care had contributed to the Reducation of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity there fore , it should be started as early as the mother conceives and continues throughout pregnancy , Clausen ( 1984 ) . This study aims to assess knowledge attitude and practices . The present study was carried out in the ante-natal clinic at Assiut . General hospital and three maternal and child health centers in Assiut these centers are kolta as urban community , Gharb El-balad as a semi urban community and Abnoub as a rural community . 50 women were selected from each of the previously mentioned settings as specially derigned interview sheet was used to collect the necessary data .It cinsisted of four parts .The first part included questions related to individual feature of women and their husband’s ,the second part included questions related to their family feature , the third part concerned with previous obstetrical history of women and their acceptance of pregnancy . The fourth part included questions related to knowledge , attitude and practices of expectant mother in relation to ante- natal care .The findings of the present study revealed that one quqrter of the study sample ( 25.5 % ) lacked basic and essential knowledge about ante-natal care , rost of older women ( 88.2% ) were more likely to have poor knowledge in relation to ante-natal care higher educated women ( 66.7% ) were more likely to have good knowledge about ante-natal care compared to ( 33.5%) of lower educated women ( 90 %) were more likely to have good ante-natal care knowledge compared to housewives ( 10%) . Rost of the primigravida women ( 88.2%) were more likely to have poor knowledge in relation to ante-natal care compared to ( 11.8%) of women whose gravidity was less than 5 . rost of women who had current pregnancy complication ( 88.2% ) were more likely to have poor knowledge in relation to ante- natal care compared to ( 11.8%) of those who hadn’t rost of the study sample whose family income was less than 100 pound/ month ( 92.2%) were more likely to have poor knowledge in relation to ante-natal care compared to (7.8%) of them whose family income was more than 100 pound / month and also two thirds of the sampole ( 66.7%) whose family income was more than 100 pound / month were more likely to have good ante-natal care knowledge compared to those whose family income was less than 100 pound / month ( 33.3% ) .
