Abstract

Peripheral nerve injuries are common injuries that require proper surgical techniques for achievement of satisfactory outcome. The microscopic anatomy of the peripheral nerves, specially their fascicular arrangement makes their repair a special surgical problem. In spite of that, proper surgical technique of peripheral nerve repair is the same like any tissue repair. After the accurate choice of the surgical technique; the surgical points that can be controlled are the adequate preparation of the two stumps, good alignment, and suturing the two ends without tension at the suture line or leaving a gap. New advances are developing for better outcome of the surgical repair of these injuries. In this work, 40 patients suffering from peripheral nerve injury were treated by different surgical techniques; epineurial and group fascicle repair and internal and external neurolysis. All the patients were available for follow up from 6 to 18 months. The youngest patient was 4years old and the eldest was 62 years old. They were 30 male and 10 females. The median nerve was the most injured nerve and the common peroneal nerve was the least injured one.The results were satisfactory in 33 patients as sensory recovery and in 30 patients as motor power recovery. The younger the patient, the more favourable was the recovery. Skilful primary repair showed itself to be the best chance for injuries amenable for it. Among various surgical techniques used, the epineurial and group fascicle repair types of surgery were associated with better outcome while the internal neurolysis was associated with bad outcome.
