Abstract

The present study was carried out in pots during two successive seasons (2000 and 2001) at the experimental station of Botany Deportment, National Research center (NRC), Cairo - Dokki. The aim of this work is directed to study the effect of foliar application of benzyl adenine (BA) and / or mepiquate chloride (Pix) on the growth characters, shedding, yield components and some chemical composition of soybean plant.
Throughout the vegetative, flowering and fruiting stages (in the two seasons), the growth criteria and different metabolic parameters were determined (root and stem length, stem diameter, leaves number, leaves area, number of branches, fresh and dry weights of shoot and root, pigments, minerals, carbohydrate fractions, nitrogenous fraction, amino-N, total soluble-N, Protein-N, and total-N, and the endogenous phytohormones (GA3, IAA, ABA and cytokinins) were determined.
Yield and its components were determined in the treated and untreated soybean plant, also, the content of carbohydrate, nitrogen, protein and oil percentages, fatty acids contents and mineral contents were determined.
The reported results could be summarized as follows: 1- Growth criteria :
The shoot growth (stem length, diameter, number of leaves, area of leaves, number of branches, fresh and dry weights of shoot), in general, were significantly increased in response to,
Summary and Conclusion 151
all BA treatments in both seasons. Also, the root growth (root length, fresh and dry weight) showed the same effect.
Pix treatments induced a significant increment in all morphological parameters in both shoot and root of soybean plants throughout the experimental period of growth (in two seasons). In general, the most pronounced increments in all morphological parameters were observed at 50 ppm of Pix.
Concerning the effect of BA combined with Pix showed higher increments regarding shoots and roots parameters in comparison to each growth regulator alone or the untreated plants, the maximum values in all morphological parameters was obtained in response to 50 ppm BA + 50 ppm Pix. 2-Yield and its components :
Regarding the foliar spray of BA and/or Pix, it is clear that all doses increased significantly the number of pods/plant, seeds number/plant, seed yield/plant, pods weight/plant and weight of 100-seeds of soybean treated plants as compared with control. The maximum values were obtained in response to the
interaction of BA + Pix.
The most effective dose was recorded inresponse 50 ppm BA + 50 ppm Pix in all yield components. 3-Chemical composition of shoot: Photosynthetic pigments:
All BA treatments increased significantly the
photosynthetic pigments such as chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b chl a + b and carotenoids at Vegetative, flowering and fruiting stages
in soybean treated leaves.
