Abstract

One thousand livers frori a1aueed i&tive calves ain€ froti two xaonths up to two years from both Cairo and Assitt abb&oir were exanined. One huiãred and five livers were found showing different pathological lesione. The percentage of liver affections was found to be about 10%.
Detailed study on the gross and histopathological
findings lead, us to classify the lesions microscopicaily into:
I. Dystrophic changes.
II. Izfflamiatory changes.
III. A sporadic case of telangiectasis. Livers affected with dystrophic changes were identified
according to the predominant degenerative changes into two groups. In the first group the livers showed protoinous dystrophic changes while in the second one the 1L.vors showed both fat and proteints dstrophic chans.
Livers which showed inflai:iraatory changes could be
grouped according to the prominent flnmatory changes into the following groups:
1 — Livers affected with. aerou hepatitis.
2 — Iivers affected with parencbmatous hepatitis.
3 Livers affected with parasitic hepatitis.
4 Livers affeøted with necrotic hepatitis.
3 Livers affected with. suppurative hepatitis.
The gross and hisbopatbologica.l changes of the livers were described separetely in each group. It had been found that parenchymatous hepatitis was the principle type of hepatitis present in calves and M reached about 50% of all affected livers however, the percentage of parasitic hepatitis was also high and reached about thirty percent.
Histoehemical studies on the noia1 calves livers as well as those with. different pathological affections were also done. The q.ualitative and quantitative distributiol3. of iron—containing pigment and glycogen wa êescribed. 1b was foi4 that the iron—positive pigment observed in livers is mostly derived. frora destroyed e brocytes particularly in case of parasitic hepatitis. In livers affected with different pathological cono.itions the concentration gJycogen was generally decreased.
