Abstract

SENV is a single stranded (SS) circular non enveloped DNA virus which was recovered from HIV positive Intravenous drug user patient who had post-transfusion hepatitis not related to any of the known hepatitis viruses.
The virus owes its name from the initials of the patient in whom the virus was first identified. It belongs to the superfamily of TTV related viruses, family of circoviridae.
Most screenings have found the highest detection rates of SENV among polytransfused patients. However as the virus can be detected in a significant proportion of young subjects without the risk of parentral infection in their case history so this suggests other routes of transmission.
The present study aimed at viewing SENV infection among type C chronic hepatitis infection patients and clarifying the relationship between SENV and liver disease.
The study included 50 patients with chronic liver disease with HCV infection attending the out patient clinic of the Tropical Medicine Unit, Ain Shams University and 60 apparently healthy blood donors.
Both patients and blood donors were subjected to full history taking, thorough clinical examination, laboratory investigations including CBC,coagulation profiles, liver function tests,HBsAg, HCVAb,polymerase chain reaction(PCR) was done to detect HCV RNA genotyping and HCV RNA level for patient group only,PCR was done to detect SENV-DNA in both patients and blood donors.
