Abstract

This work views a modern exit for turning from using powdered photodegradation catalysts, which cause serious problems during their separation from the treated water, to using immobilized photocatalysts deposited as thin layers on glass (or any suitable material) sheets. The separa-tion on the latter photocatalyst is spontaneous, since the water to be treated moves whereas the catalyst containing sheets remain immobilized. The current catalysts, were prepared using the sol-gel technique and realized very strong adhe-sion to the supporting glass sheets. The current thin-layered catalysts aquire much greatly higher photodegradation activities compared to their powdered versions, e.g., thin layered TiO2 catalyst was 167 times more active than its powdered version. In the present work, analysis of the original pollutant (anthracene) and its photodegradation intermediate products, was carried out using HPLC which minimizes errors coming through extraction of the organic components in water, since the irradiated contaminated water is directly injected in the analysing apparatus.
The photocatalysts prepared and tested have been characterized via XRD spectroscopy, SEM and TEM photography and surface analysis using low temperature adsorption (BET), which shed light on the behaviour of the polluting substrate on the catalyst surface during the course of photodegradation till its complete mineralization.
