Abstract

Plants continued as a mainstay of medicine as it evolved. Even in the past, most families used home herbal remedies to control small medical emergencies and to keep minor ailments from turning into chronic problems. Herbal medicines are the staple of medical treatment in many developing countries whether for general illness or for parasitic diseases. This essay declares the therapeutic role of herbs in treatment of parasitic diseases and their natural role in comparison to medical treatment for the health of population.
Most of the herbs used for medicinal purposes are in the crude forms. Herbs are dried and used in whole or cut form. They are prepared as teas and sometimes as pills or capsules for internal use and poultices for external use.
Regarding herbal treatment of trematode infections Myrrh proved great efficacy in treating fascioliasis. Elecampane root, Smilax aristolochiifolia, sarsaparilla root and watercress proved great efficacy in treating clonorchiasis. Areca nut and pumpkin seeds were effective in treating heterophyiasis. Schistosomiasis was treated using artemether, Abrus precatorius, Peterocarpus angolensis, and Ozoroa insignis. Also the plant extracts from Berkheya speciosa, Euclea natalensis and Trichilia emetica proved to be lethal to the schistosomula. Myrrh and Ferula assafoetida were also effective. Herbal Molluscicides are applied as a source of cheap, effective and environmentally acceptable alternative for synthetic molluscicides and chemotherapy.
Regarding tapeworm Infections homeopathic treatments for T. saginata, T. solium, and D. latum are approved and used among many communities. There is a number of reliable herbal antihelminthics.The most prominent are; malefern, pomegranate bark, pumpkin seeds, kousso, thymol, granatum and Cucurbita pepo. Bahia powder, Embelia schimperi, Iodwa were effective against H. diminuta .T. saginata was treated with the mixture of boiled areca nuts and pumpkin seeds. Zanthoxylum bungeanum and Zanthoxylum simulans were effective in treating T. solium. Stemona sessilifolia proved potency in treating Cycticercosis and the effect of serial dilutions of crude garlic extract on adult H. nana was proved.
