Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a disease of insulin deficiency and/or insulin resistance and many other metabolic disorders can be determined other than hyperglycemia , which is the most early abnormality in diabetes mellitus. Primary diabetes is still a heterogenous disease, the two common types are type I or insulin-sependent diabetes mellitus and type II or non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus. The induction of diabetes by streptozotocin in adult male albino rats has been adopted in this study as the most appropriate animal model analogous in the nature of biochemical defects and metabolic changes to those encountered in the case of human diabetes mellitus, this was achieved by respeated i. v. injections of streptozotocin of dose 20 mg/kg body weight and streptozotocin was injected on three successive days and dissolved in citrate buffer (Ph 4.5, 0.5M). |
