Abstract Rheumatic mitral stenosis is one of the commonest valvular disease in Egypt and other developed countries. Mitral commissurotomy has been used successfully for many years to treat patients with mitral stenosis. This study aimed to compare and evaluate the results and the effects of two techniques through analysis of two groups of patients who underwent balloon mitral commissurotomy (BMC), and open mitral commissurotomy (OMC) respectively. These patients were, from the clinical and morphological point of view, optimal for both balloon and open commissurotomy procedures as demonstrated by a mean age of < 30 years, absence of mitral valve calcification on 2D echo-cardiography and an echo-cardiographic score < 8 in all patients. |
