Abstract

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular, gram negative bacterium, and it is the causative agent of several local and systemic human diseases which may be acute or chronic such as trachoma, oculogenital and neonatal infections ت ª Trachoma is an eye disease caused by infection with the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the leading cause of º ø cases of blindness (Resinkoff et al., ت ªØ). At a recent WHO meeting, oeoe countries, mainly in Africa and Asia (Polack et al., ت ªoe Endemic trachoma was documented in Egypt as early as the º º th century BC (Duke-Elders, º º oe º º ª earlier demonstrated a high prevalence of trachoma in many governorates of Egypt as well as it was recognized to be an important leading cause of blindness throughout the country including Cairo. Also, trachoma was known to be a serious public health problem in Menoufiya governorate and a significant contributor to vision loss (Ezz al Arab et aal., ت ª º et
