Abstract

Kidney transplant recipients have the lowest incidence of fungal infections of all solid organ transplant recipients
(1.4-14%). Fungal infections in kidney transplant recipients may manifest as primary cutaneous fungal infections or as systemic mycoses, invading vital organs in the body.
Fungal pathogens most often responsible for infection in kidney transplant recipients are Candida species,
Aspergillus species, Cryptococcus neoformans, Mucor species, and Histoplasma capsulatum. A number of fungi are emerging as significant, though still infrequent pathogens in
kidney transplantation. Overall, Candida species are the most common cause of fungal infection in the kidney transplant population.
In order to improve the survival for these infections, an early diagnosis is required. Conventional microbiological,
histological and radiological techniques remain the cornerstone of diagnosis. New diagnostic tools could be used nowadays for prompt diagnosis of invasive fungal infections(e.g. Galactomannan assay, 1,3-beta-D-glucan, PCR) with high sensitivity and specificity results.
