Sana’a city, Yemen: A study
In the Geography of crime
This dissertation deals with the geography of crime
in Sana’a, the capital and primate city in the Republic
of Yemen, It comprises of Seven chapters Sequenced as
follows:
١ - The first chapter is entitled: The environmental
and social components in the study area in relation to
the crime phenomenon. The physical, historical , social
and cultural dimensions are interpreted and revealed to
understand specific criminal aspects that are distinguished
and absolutely different from other areas
٢ - The second chapter is entitled the historical
geography of crime in Yemen. It deals with the temporal
analysis or criminal act from a chronological point of
view. the chapter discussed the crime phenomenon in
three periods, first, pre Yemen revolution of ١٩٦٢, the
second post revolution, the third and last, after the
unification of North and south Yemen. Crime
classification, criminal data Sources were attached to this
chapter.
٣ - The third chapter is entitled: The spatial
analysis of crime in Sana’a city. In this chapter, the
crime statistics, crime rates, and hot spots of crimes were
studied not only numerically, but also spatially, and the
areal differentiation was emphasized both inter – urban
and intra- urban. Many comparisons were held between
Sana’a and other governorates in this Context. The chapter
٣
was concluded with a detailed study to the concept of ” the
journey to crime.
٤ - The Fourth Chapter is entitled: The temporal
analysis of crime in Sana’a city. In this chapter, the
general trend of crime was analyzed for both crime against
person, and crime against property. The chapter draw
attention to specific temporal components, the most
important were the time series analysis of crime in the
study area, and, the seasonality of crime, daily monthly,
seasonally and annually.
٥ - The Fifth chapter is entitled: The Demographic,
Social, and economic background of crime in Sana’a
city. In this chapter many distinguished features were
revealed which are considered unique to the Yemeni
People. So, the analysis of this chapter discussed the
impact of clan and tribal population structure on crime
types and crime rates. It was clear from demographic
investigation that there is some similarities with most
other countries that crime in the study area and Yemen as
a whole is a male product however, the cultural
uniqueness was responsible for many other dissimilarities.
Special attention was devoted to serious problems in
Sana’a such as unemployment, over population, elevated
rates of poverty in relation to some dangerous crimes as
kidnapping of tourists. The conflict among citizens was
studied through the socalled offender – victim
relationship.
٦ – The Sixth chapter is entitled: Levels of security
and Justice in Sana’a. the chapter analyzed the spatial
image and configuration of police services through the
٤
deployment of police individuals and personnel. Many
items were notified in this context like the equity in
distribution of services, disparities in allocations, and the
fear of crime concept according to the different mental
maps of Sana’a city population. The Fear of crime concept
was applied depending upon field work by the student in
Sana’a city divisions.
٧ - The Seventh And last chapter is Entitled:
Future Vision. In this chapter, the area of Sana’a city
which represents the crime theatre was subjected to
elaborate investigation aiming at more alleviation of crime
rates. The discussion emphasized the role of geographical
dimensions in this context. So, strategies, to achieve such
goals, should be taken into consideration. Mechanisms
comprising spatial procedures to be utilized side by side
with Comentional and traditional actions like the use of
mass media, education, Jurisprudence, and training to put
crime under control.
It seems too hard, even too strange among some
planners to adopt the geographical dimensions while
handling some spatial issues like redrawing administrative
divisions, or define hot spots of crime to control deviance.
Finally, the utilization of modern technologies like
geographic Information systems (GIS) and Remote
sensing (RS) in addition to application of various
geographical and spatial assimilation models, all are too
valuable while designing crime prevention strategies.
