Abstract For many years, vascular events, such as myocardial infarction MI) and ischaemic stroke, and diseases, such as angina and peripheral arterial disease (PAD), have been the major causes of death and disability in the Western World These arterial diseases and events are the result of atherothrombosis which is a systemic disease involving the entire arterial tree (coronary, cerebrovascular and peripheral arterial) and is frequently observed simultaneously in more than one bed On the other hand, some studies have shown the varying involvement of cardiovascular risk factors (CRF) such as hypertension diabetes, obesity, smoking, dyslipidaemia, or prior history of vascular disease.in the development of atherosclerosis in different vascular regions The ankle/brachial blood pressure index (ABI) is a measure of generalized atherosclerosis and peripheral artery disease in the lower extremities. The finding of a low ABI indicates the presence of flowlimiting atherosclerosis in a peripheral artery and likely reflects the presence of generalized atherosclerosis. A low ABI is more prevalent in patients with cardiovascular risk factors such as smoking, diabetes, and hypertension. So it was important to determine whether a low ABI provides additional risk information over and above the assessment of conventional cardiovascular risk factors. |
