Abstract
STTs pose some of the greatest diagnostic challenges in surgical pathology due to their numerous subtypes. FNAC is an accepted diagnostic technique in diagnosing many malignancies, but its role in the evaluation of STS has remained controversial. Therefore, this study was carried out to review the utility and pitfalls of FNAC in the primary diagnosis of STTs. The findings of this review show that FNAC has several major advantages in diagnosing STTs. however, due to the wide spectrum of soft tissue neoplasms, and their overlapping morphologic appearances, this may make them susceptible to misdiagnosis by FNAC. Despite of this, FNAC in conjunction with ancillary studies and the clinical and radiographic data can approach a diagnostic accuracy of 95% for the diagnosis of STTs.
