Abstract
Since acute gastroenteritis is an acute inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract that may be caused by a variety of microbes, and since honey has antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, our study aimed at evaluation of the effects of honey when added to the ORS in the treatment of acute gastroenteritis in infants and children. During this clinical trial, 100 infants and children with acute gastroenteritis were admitted to the pediatric hospital of Ain Shams University and were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups, each consisted of 50 patients: Group (I) received ORS for rehydration and Group (II) received ORS with honey. The mean ages of patients of group (I) and (II) were 1.5±1.2 and 1.1±0.8 years respect-tively. Cases with severe dehydration or/and intractable vomiting and inability to tolerate oral fluids were excluded from the study.
