Abstract

The pathogenesis of nasal polyposis still needs much more effort in the future to be completely understood. Large amount of information are being generated addressing the underlying etiology of the disease and modalities of treatment The role of fungi in the pathogenesis of nasal polyposis is still in controversy. The percentage of this role is supported to some degree by the pathological detection of fungi in resected polyps, mud, allergic mucin and nasal discharge in comparison to healthy people. But this result can not insure this role because the presence of fungi can be secondary to improper sinus drainage and the use of topical steroids and antibiotics. This role seems more probable if the nasal polyposis is associated with mud and allergic mucin Diagnosis of AFRS is triple approaches starting with clinical evidence radiology, and ending with characteristic histopathology AFRS is readily recurrent. Long-term close clinical, endoscopic, and radiographic follow up is important The presence of allergic conditions like allergic rhinitis, asthma or salicylate intolerance is associated with increased incidence of recurrence of AFRS The degree of extent of nasal polyposis (sinus involvement) is directly proportionate to the incidence of recurrence of AFRS.
