Abstract

This prospective study was conducted in order to evaluate the effect of nootropic druge therapy (piracetam, Ginko Biloba extract ) versus language therapy in rehabitlitation of delayed langage development children with mental retardation. 60 mentally retarded children were subjected to the protocol of assessment of delayed language development that included I.Q assessment and language test the children were divided into 3 groups group (A) included 20 children received language therapy only for 6 mouths, group (B) include 20 children received different forms nootropic drug therapy only for 6 mouths, group (C) included 20 children received a combination of language and different forms of nootropic drug therapy for 6 months. The follow up evaluations were done by repeating the whole protocol of assessment for groups of children after 6 mouths.
This study demonstrated that significant improvements were detected in the cognitive and language abilities in children who received language therapy only (group A) and combined language and drug therapy (group C).
The degree of improvements in both groups were nearly equal and this study also demonstrated non-significant improvements in the group of drug therapy only(group B).
The results proved ineffective role of nootropic drugs in rehabilitation of mentally retarded children. On the other hand the study confirmed the effective role of language therapy in rehabilitation of those children.
