Abstract
The aim of the present study was to evaluate functional renal changes in cirrhotic patients with and without ascites and possible disturbed hormonal etiology for these changes certainly aldosterone hormone and urinary sodium excretion Patients and method The present study was conducted on 40 cirrhotic patients were selected from 64 patients as well as 20 healthy persons of matched age and sex as a control group. Diagnosis of cirrhotic was done by clinical examination, ultrasonographic findings and laboratory investigations Patients and controls were classified into the following groups: GI Comprised (20) cirrhotic patients with diuretic free ascites detected either clinically or by ultrasound, GII: Comprised (20) cirrhotic patients without ascites detected clinically and / or radiologically, GIII Comprised (20) healthy controls Patients and controls were subjected to the following: Proper and detailed history taking and thorough clinical examination including general and local abdominal examination).The patients and controls were prescribed a low sodium diet with about 2g/day and bed rest ( as possible) four days before the study where they subjected to the following: Complete blood count, blood sugar level , liver function test viral markers (HBsAg and HCV-Ab), renal function test, serum electrolytes including serum sodium and potassium levels, abdominal Ultrasonography, measurement of 24 -hours urinary sodium as well as measurement of serum aldosterone .
