Abstract
Premature rupture of the fetal membranes (PROM)is a serious problem that can occur during pregnancy. It is defined as rupture of the fetal membranes with leakage of the amniotic fluid , whatever the age of pregnancy, before the onset of labour. The incidence varies from one study to another , in one study, it varies from 4-6% and other demonstrated that, the incidence is 2-3%. The exact etiology is vague, but usually the cause is multifactorial, depending on the special anatomy of the fetal membranes, protecting factors and risk factors that lead to weakening and destruction of the membranes. There are many studies suggesting that maternal nutritional deficiency , smoking, cervical incompetence, sexual activity, certain connective tissue disorders and finally genital tract infection predispose to PROM.
