Abstract

The evolving laparoscopic technology has enabled endoscopic
management of most adnexal masses. Laparoscopy has been widely
accepted as a standard diagnostic and therapeutic method for adnexal masses
with a low risk for malignancy. However, there are concerns regarding
laparoscopic management of adnexal masses including misdiagnosis of
ovarian malignancies, tumor spillage during operation, and inability to
perform a complete staging procedure.
There are few published studies that review out comes in patients who
are not specifically thought to be at low risk for malignancy. Dottino et al, in
1999 has reported a four- year experience with laparoscopic management of
adnexal masses in patients at high and low risks for cancer at Mount Sinai
School of Medicine from 1992 to 1996.
The aim of this study is the evaluation of the feasibility and safety of
laparoscopic management of benign &suspicious appearing adnexal masses
in premenopausal and postmenopausal women. And to assess operative
complications associated with this approach.
We performed a retrospective study of patients undergoing laparoscopic
management of adnexal masses over a 4- year period from July 1st 2004 to
June 30th 2008. All the patients were treated in Obstetrics & Gynecology
Department of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
