Abstract Aim of the work To investigate the incidence and type of abnormal esophageal motility in a group of hemodialysis patients. Summary Chronic renal failure is associated with many gastrointestinal disorders as anorexia, hiccup, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and gastrointestinal bleeding. These signs and symptoms may be related to a variety of circulating uremia toxins which possible affect the function and structure of gastrointestinal tract. Recently uremia can cause what is called uremic neuropathy of the vagus nerve of uremia itself produces myopathy of smooth muscles of the esophagus but this study revealed non specific motility dysfunction in asymptomatic patients. We reported an incidence of tripasic and biphasic contractions that was higher in patients than control subjects (30% vs. 0% and 65% vs. 0% respectively). These differences were statistically significant (X2=7.2; P<0.01 and X2=19.3; P<0.0001). Non transmitted and simultaneous contractions were found less often and with incidence still statistically insignificant between the control subjects and the patient. The study revealed a negative correlation between these abnormalities and serum calcium. So esophageal dysfunction represents additional manifestations of gastrointestinal tract involvement in chronic uremia. |
