Abstract

The aim of the work is to study the activity of antioxidant enzymes; superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus with and without retinopathy, in an attempt to find out if these antioxidant enzymes could have a relation to diabetic retinopathy, we also want to study the levels of oxidized LDL in diabetes mellitus to clarify its possible association with diabetic retinopathy.
The following results were obtained:
Comparing each diabetic group with the normal control group:
- There were very highly significant elevation of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol in both diabetic groups than the normal controls, and a significant decrease in HDL-cholesterol.
- Oxidized IDL were significantly higher in both diabetic groups than the normal control group.
- The 3 antioxidant enzymes; SOD, CAT, and GPx were significantly lower in both diabetic groups than the control group.
Comparing subgroups with and without retinopathy:
- Diabetes duration was significantly longer in subgroups with retinopathy in both types of diabetes.
- S.B.P. and D.B.P. were significantly higher in subgroups with retinopathy but there is no significant association after doing multiple regression analysis.
- HbA1c was significantly higher in subgroups with retinopathy.
- Total cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL-cholesterol were significantly higher in subgroups with retinopathy, and HDL-cholesterol was significantly lower in groups with retinopathy.
- Oxidized LDL was significantly higher in subgroups with retinopathy.
- The 3 antioxidant enzymes were significantly lower in subgroups with retinopathy.
