Abstract

The present study aimed to:
1- Review literature and collect the most recent work in first episode psychosis and gender to clarify areas of ambiguity and to be acquainted with the methodology, findings and expectations in these important areas of research.
2- Provide clinical description of a sample of subjects with first episode non-affective psychoses, including:
- Premorbid functioning.
- Prodrome.
- Onset.
- Duration of untreated psychoses.
- Clinical presentation of the psychotic episode and level of functioning during the episode.
- Female history.
- Life events preceding the onset and their possible correlation with the symptoms.
3- Explore gender differences and similarities in a sample of first episode non-affective psychosis.
The present study has reached to the following conclusions:
1- Females had more sub-acute and to a less extent acute inset, less impairment in premorbid functioning in the year prior to the first psychotic episode, shorter duration of prodrome and more family histology of psychiatric disorders.
2- Regarding the prodromal symptoms, males had impairment of functioning more commonly, while females had decreased concentration more commonly than males.
3- Regarding the presenting symptoms, females had significantly more, otor and behavioral abnormalities, more non-verbal auditory hallucinations, sexual
Hallucinations and abnormal quietness of voice.
4- The results of the present study demonstrated that the younger the age at onset, the poorer is the global functioning in the year preceding the first psychotic episode.
5- No differences found between schizophrenic males and females in duration of prodrome and prodromal symptoms. Also, there were no differences in family history of psychiatric disorders and presenting symptoms of the first psychotic spisode.
