Abstract

EFFECT OF HONEY AND SOME OF HERBS FOR TREATMENT
LIVER PHYSIOLOGICAL DISORDERS USING EXPERIMENTAL
ANIMALS
This study was undertaken to study the effect of honey and some of herbs that
were suggested in folk medicine for treatment the liver disorders, after knowing their
active constituents and their biological activities.
Adult’s male albino rats,Sprague-Dawley strains 180-200g were divided into
18 groups,4 rats for each group. All rats were treated subcutaneous injection with
carbon tetrachloride (Ccl4)to induce liver disorders except one group. All groups of
rats fed on the experimental diet for six weeks as the following:Casein only (Control
Negative);Casein after injection with (Ccl4)(Control Positive).Casein in addition to
20%of (Honey)(Group 1);Casein in addition to 20%of (Nigella Sativa)(Group 2);
Casein in addition to 20%of (Curcuma Longa)(Group 3);Casein in addition to 20%
of (Zingiber Officinale)(Group 4);Casein in addition to 20%of (Piper Nigrum)
(Group 5);Casein in addition to 20%of (Honey 10%,and Nigella Sativa 10%)
(Group 6);Casein in addition to 20%of (Honey 10%,and Curcuma Longa 10%)
(Group 7);Casein in addition to 20%of (Honey 10%,and Zingiber Officinale 10%)
(Group 8);Casein in addition to 20%of (Honey 10%,and Piper Nigrum 10%)
(Group 9);Casein in addition to 20%of (Nigella Sativa 10%,and Curcuma Longa
10%)(Group 10);Casein in addition to 20%of (Nigella Sativa 10%,and Zingiber
Officinale 10%)(Group 11);Casein in addition to 20%of (Nigella Sativa 10%,and
Piper Nigrum 10%)(Group 12);Casein in addition to 20%of (Curcuma Longa 10%,
and Zingiber Officinale 10%)(Group 13);Casein in addition to 20%of (Curcuma
Longa 10%and Piper Nigrum 10%)(Group 14);Casein in addition to 20%of
(Zingiber Officinale 10%,and Piper Nigrum 10%)(Group15);Casein in addition to
20%of (Honey 4%,Nigella Sativa 4%,Curcuma Longa 4%,Zingiber Officinale 4%,
and Piper Nigrum 4%)(Group 16).
At the end of experimental period all groups of rats were killed and blood sample
were subjected to determine serum liver enzymes [GOT (AST)and GPT (ALT)].
The results revealed that all diets were higher than control positive and the
diets were consisted Curcuma Longa/Zingiber Officinale,Curcuma Longa/Piper
Nigrum and Zingiber Officinale/Piper Nigrum were showed very high significant
differences (P <0.001)of S.GOT,when compared with control group. On the other
hand, all diets were higher than control positive and the control negative and the diets
were consisted Nigella Sativa/Zingiber Officinale were showed very high significant
differences (P <0.001)of S.GPT,when compared with control group. As for total
billirubin the results point to that all diets were higher than control positive and the
control negative only showed very high significant differences (P <0.001),when
compared with control group. When, the control negative and the diets were
consisted Honey and Curcuma Longa/Zingiber Officinale were showed a high
significant differences (P <0.01)of direct billirubin, comparing with control group.
However, the results refer to that the control negative and the diets were consisted
Nigella Sativa,Curcuma Longa,Piper Nigrum,Honey/Nigella Sativa,Honey/
Zingiber Officinale,Honey/Piper Nigrum and mixture of honey and herbs were
revealed to very high significant differences (P <0.001)of indirect billirubin, when
compared with control group.
