Abstract

The objectives of the study:
1- To create a lethal Model of acute pancreatitis and investigate the effects of pretreatment with calcium channel blockers on the biochemical parameters.
2- Creation of a sub-lethal model in which about 40 percent of the untreated animals can survive up to 72 hours. These animals will be compared to animals pretreated with a calcium channel blocker on the basis of survival, biochemical, and histopathological parameters.
3- In the field of clinical transplantation, thrombosis and graft pancreatitis are common causes of graft loss or non-function. Therefore, we will investigate the role of calcium channel blockers as a protective measure against graft pancreatitis and thrombosis in pancreas transplant recipients.
Our work included an experimental part witch was concerned with the role of calcium channel blocker in amelioration of biochemical parameters in a lethal model of acute pancreatitis and its effects on the survival of sublelhal model.
The results showed an improvement in the laboratory parameters consistent with improvement in the survival.
Acute pancreatitis is considered on of the major causes of early pancreas transplantation graft loss. As on imblication of our experimental work, administration of calcium channel blocker in the early post-operative period to pancreas transplant recipients markedly reduced the incidence of this fatal disease.
