Abstract

Aim of the work is to clarify:
1- The effect of adenoid and/ or tonsillar hypertrophy on the middle ear pressure.
2- The effect of adenoidectomy and/or tonsillectomy on the middle ear pressure.
3- The relationship between adenoid size and the middle ear pressure pre and post adenoidectomy.
Conclusions
1- No significant statistical difference pre and post tonsillectomy either in the middle ear pressure or tympanometric pattern incidence.
2- A significant statistical difference was found in the middle ear pressure (P<0.008) and a tympanometric pattern incidence, (type A tempanogram represents 44.3% preoperative and 84.8% postoperative) pre and post adenoidectomy with improvement of the middle ear pressure.
3- There was a direct linear relationship between the size of the adenoids and the middle ear pressure pre and post operative with maximum improvement after removal of big adenoids, (P<0.009).
From the previous results it can be concluded that hypertrophied adenoids causes Eustachian malfunction resulting in increased negative middle ear pressure. Also, adenoidectomy especially of big or moderate sized. Had a favorable effect in improving the middle ear pressure and the Eustachian tube function. So, early adenoidectomy may impd the onset of secretory otitis media and thus eliminating the need for ventilation tube.
