Abstract
The study area extends for about 150 km, from sidi Abd El-Rahman in the east to morsa matruh in the west. It lies between longitude 28o 45’ and 27o 10’ E and latitude 31o & 31o 26’ N. The depth ranges from about 18 to 71 m. on the basis of its morphology the investigated area includes the gulf of kanayis and Abu Hashaifa Bay. The gulf extends for about 85 km from sidi Abd El-Rahman to Ras El-kanayis. The average width of its continental shelf reaches about 7.5 km and it is narrow compared with that off the Nile delta. Abu Hashaifa bay extends for about 65 km, from Ras El-kanayis to Marsa Matruh. Its continental shelf is very narrow and does not exceed 2-3 km, with a very steep slope.
