Abstract
Metabolic syndrome is now receiving a renewed attention due to its rising prevalence worldwide, together with the concomitant worldwide epidemic of excess weight. Individuals with metabolic syndrome are at a threefold greater risk of coronary heart diseases and strokes, and more than a fourfold greater risk of cardiovascular mortality.
The study revealed a high prevalence of metabolic syndrome (45.3%) among cardiovascular patients. High-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) concentrations were correlated with almost all MetS components, except serum triglycerides.
Lifestyle modification, nutritional education, promotion of healthy diets, keeping normal weight especially at younger age and promotion of regular physical activity are recommended, Also hsCRP should be added as a clinical criterion for the diagnosis of metabolic syndrome.
