Abstract

machines with a constant frequency sinusoidal power supply have been used in ant speed applications, whereas DC machines were preferred for variable-speed s. DC machines have the disadvantages of higher cost, higher rotor inertia and tenance problems with commutators and brushes. AC machines do not have theiiadvantages of DC machines.
F1’he control and estimation of induction motor drives constitute a vast subject, and the technology has further advanced in recent years. The control and estimation of AC drives
in general are considerably more complex than those for DC drives, and this complexity [ihcreases substantially if high performances are demanded. The main reasons for this omplexity are the need of variable-frequency, harmonically optimum converter power mipplies, the complex dynamics of AC machines, machine parameter variations and the idculties of processing feedback signals in the presence of harmonics. -
With high phase number of an induction motor, the current stress of the semiconductor devices decreases, torque ripple is reduced and the rotor harmonic currents are smaller. Also the power per rms ampere ratio is higher for the same machine volume and harmonic order of the DC link current for voltage fed inverter drives is reduced. In order to control multi-phase induction motors, they could be fed from multi-phase inverters instead of being fed from a sinusoidal supply. As a result, harmonics were hected into the stator flux and the stator currents causing torque ripple around its steady- State value. In this thesis a five-phase induction motor is described as an example for multi-phase induction motors showing its response when fed from a sinusoidal supply. Also a general modeling for multi-phase induction motors is given. Also an inverter control of multi- phase induction motor is presented. Different types of multi-level inverters and the effect of applying multi-level inverters to three-phase induction motors is introduced. Finally, a combination between multi-phase induction motors and multi-level inverters is introduced.
Simulation and analysis for all the previous works are performed using MATLAB/Simulink.[.
