Abstract

physiological and ecological studies on The present investigation was designed to study the ~coflora of cotton seeds in Egypt using 19 samples collected from different localities. The effect of variious levels of seed moisture content, relative humidity, temperature and length of storage period on the seeddborne fungi, was also investigated. Production of aflaatoxins by the isolated fungal species and stI~ins was also tested.
The results obtained are summarized as follows:
1- Eleven genera and 33 species were isolated and identi~ fied in the first part of the investigation. The most comnon species encountered on 2 % glucose-Czapekts
agar using the dilution and the seed plate method were; Aspergillus niger, A. flavus, A. terreus, A. tamarii, Mucor racemOSUB and Rhizopus stolonifer. On 2 ~ celllulcse-Czapek’s agar, A. niger, A. flavus, A. terreus, A. tumigatus, A. zonatus, ~ucor racemosus, Rhizopus stolonifer, Fusarium oXlsporum, F. moniliforme and Apiocrea chr, ysospermum were more frequentl.y” encountered.
2- When the cotton seed samples were conditioned to different levels of moisture content ( 15, 18 and 22 % )
storage fungi of cotton seed with special reference to aflatoxin production. The result obtained are summarized :-elevera and 33 species were isolated and indentified in the first part of the investigation . the most common species encountered on 2% glucose-czapek’s agar using the dilution and the seed plate method were; aspergillus niger, a. flavus, a.tamarii, mucor racemosus and rhizopus stolonifer.
