Abstract

The liver is the metabolic centre of the body and despite even the most modern and intensive supportive measures, an anhepatic state cannot be tolerated for only few hours.
Advances in surgical technique, anaesthesia and in under standing of the pathophysiological process which follows extensive liver resection have allowed an increasing use of hepatectomy in the treatment of liver disease. Liver regeneration following resection is rapid and the return of full liver function will soon attends a successful resection.
Careful preoperative evaluation including the history and clinical examination, liver function tests help to estimate the severity of the disease, to assess the progno¬sis and to evaluate therapy
