Abstract

Splenomegaly and portal hypertension is a common feature in patients with liver cirrhosis (Shah et aI., 1996), in which there is a
complex relationship between the size of the spleen and its function and portal hemodynamics (Peter and Loswasky, 1990), detection of this relation require several methods for detection of spleen size and assessment of its function (Shah et aI., 1996), in which the spleen may play a dual role in that it may contribute to < hematological hypersplenism concurrently with functional hypersplenism (Muller and Toghill, 1994). Splenomegaly in cirrhotic patients may in fact result from different pathophysiological changes and the strong positive correlation of portal vein cross-sectional area and portal blood flow volume with spleen size emphasizes the importance of circulatory factors in splenomegaly.
