Abstract

Osteoarthritis is one of the most prevalent and disabling chronic conditions affecting multiple aspects of older adults life. The prevalence of osteoarthritis increases with age and by the age of 65, approximately 80% of the elderly population are affected. Among elderly female, it accounts for 60% of arthritis cases. The functional impairments secondary to osteoarthritis also occur more frequently in older adults moreover pain and limitation of motion restrict the independence by impairing their performance of activities of daily living leading to impaired well being and quality of life. The therapeutic regimen of osteoarthritis is complex, of long duration and requires many behavioral changes and compliance to different treatment methods as medication, physical exercises, the use of hot compress, assistive devices, activity modification, and follow up.
The aim of the study was to assess functional abilities among osteoarthritic elderly women and their compliance with treatment.
1- The study was carried out on 100 osteoarthritic elderly women selected from the geriatric out patient clinic of Mansoura General Hospital, Ministry of Health and Population. All elderly women attended the previous setting for a period of three months from April till the end of June 2005 and fulfilled the following criteria were included in the study:- Age more than 65 years, diagnosed withmedicat.
