Abstract

Degenerative changes of the cervical spine is a spectrum of disease which may be defined as anatomic adaptation to continuous influence of wear and tear on involved structures owing to its large range of motion .
It is most often multilevel and starts early in life , therfore , at a given time different motion segments in the same cervical spine may be in different phases of degeneration.
Conservatively treated patients should be followed carefully and that their neurologic statues should be reevaluated at three months after the start of conservative treatment .
for those who experience neurologic deterioration during this period , decompression surgery should be considered as a mean of obtaining a satisfactory final outcome.
The basic principles of cervical spine surgery continue to include adequate decompression , provision of a structuraally competent , biologically functional bone graft , and creation of a stable construct to allow for solid fusion.
