Abstract

Analysis and evaluation of severe accidents in nuclear,ti pourer lalitj showed ciarLy that tile human contribution in P these accidents was significant and declared the importance of giving man -machine interface more attention. The human reliability is affected and controlled by the so called per¬formance shaping factors ”PSFs”. These factors control the amount of variability in the human performance in specific task in such manner as to make it highly reliable, highly unreliable, or at some level in Uutwoon. This study explores the improtance of ”PSFs” quantifica
tion and their use as dterminants to the human error proba bility in conducting nuicieax tasks such as operation, main tenance, and testing. performance shaping factors interact
is a very complex manner that makes it difficult to develop analyL;ical expressions describing the relative infulences of these factors on the performance of a specific task. Mathema
tical models and computer programs are needed to investigate the effect of each factor, the interaction of different fact .ors, and the effect of a set factors on the human performance.
