Abstract In this thesis, the effect of pad geometry on the externally pressurized circular bearing performance was theoretically studied. The analysis 15 conducted and solutions are provided for the effect of pad geometry for static and dynamic loading conditions. The fluid inertia and recess volume fluid compressibility effects are taken into considera- tio.n. A first-order perturbation method with respect to a small amplitude of oscillation had been used to linea- rlze the Reynolds’ equation for fluid film and recess flow continuity equation for both conventional and suggested modified bearings compensated by capillary, orlfice or constant flow valve restrictors. Expressions are obtained for load, lubricant flow, bearing stiffness and damping factor as functions of lubricant film shape, bearing dimensions and rotational speed. The results are presented in dimensionless form. The study indicated that the pad geometry has a major effect on bearing static and dynamic performance. |
